Race-day vs. in-store: which activation fits your brand?

Two places to host the moment runners keep: the finish festival, or your own store the day after. How they compare and how to choose.

Race-day engraving happens in the finish festival, minutes after runners cross the line, alongside the race itself. In-store engraving happens inside a brand's flagship store, usually the day after the marathon, free to the runner and hosted by the brand. Choose race day to be part of the event; choose in store to bring finishers through your own door.

What is the difference between a race-day and an in-store activation?

The difference is where it happens and who hosts it. A race-day activation is an engraving zone inside the finish festival, part of the race's own footprint. Runners pay on-site or pre-purchase at registration, or a sponsor covers the cost and puts its name on the zone.

An in-store activation moves the same experience into a brand's flagship store, usually on the Monday after the marathon. That day is often called Medal Monday: thousands of finishers are out in the city wearing their medals and looking for somewhere to celebrate. The brand sponsors the engraving, so it is free to the runner, and the line forms at the store's door.

Which one draws more runners?

So far the two have run at a similar scale. An in-store activation at lululemon's Chicago flagship the day after the 2026 marathon engraved 1,130 medals. Our biggest race-day events have been in the same range: 1,302 at the Miami Marathon in January 2026 and 1,165 at the Columbus Marathon in 2026.

What sets the number is capacity and demand: how many engraving machines you run, how many hours you are open, and how many finishers are nearby. In store, we size the station with one table per engraving machine to the volume you expect. Across three lululemon flagship activations, the total so far is 3,008 medals.

When should a brand choose race day?

  • You want to be part of the race itself. The finish festival is where runners, families and the race's own partners all are at the moment of finishing.
  • You don't have a store in the race city. Race day needs no retail footprint; the race provides the space.
  • The race wants an engraving zone. Sponsoring it puts your name on an amenity the race director already values. See how race-day engraving works.

When should a brand choose in store?

  • You have a flagship in a marathon city. The activation gives finishers a reason to walk through your door the day after the race.
  • You want the whole experience on your own ground. Your store, your screens, your table skirts, and a line of runners outside.
  • You want the runner's full attention. On race day the festival has many things competing for it. The day after, your store is the destination.

How does an in-store activation work?

In four steps. We plan the store footprint, power and the race-weekend schedule. We set up a branded station with one table per engraving machine, sized to your expected volume. On the day, runners submit their name and time through the FLE app, confirm it at the engraving station, and watch it engraved. Afterwards you get a wrap report with medals engraved and throughput. See in-store activations for photos from Chicago.

Can a brand do both?

They are not mutually exclusive: race day and the day after are different days, in different places. The natural place to start is the one that matches where you already have a presence: a store in the race city, or a sponsorship with the race.

Finish Line Engravers runs both, across the United States and Canada. See in-store activations, see race-day engraving, or tell us the race, the store and the date.
